Summary

ChemCon The Americas 2018, our 6th ChemCon The Americas, took place from February 5th to 9th, 2018 in New Orleans. More than 180 experts from 26 countries representing more than 115 companies, authorities and associations have attended the conference and contributed to the exchange of experiences and discussion about regulatory affairs around the globe.

The week started with a comprehensive Monday program with a workshop on REACH 2018 to assist those who still need to prepare for their 2018 REACH registrations. Followed by an in-depth pre-conference seminar on The Amended TSCA in the morning, whereby US EPA and industry experts shared their views, knowledge and experiences on the implementation of the amended TSCA. In the afternoon, another in-depth pre-conference seminar on Nuts & Bolts of which experts provided details of chemical control legislation aspects, useful tools and business examples on how to organise and handle global regulatory challenges. In the afternoon seminar sessions, the Japanese authority also provided a practical guidance to Japanese MITI-numbers and the Brazilian authority offered an outlook for the development of ROHS legislation in Brazil.

During the conference sessions, a variety of aspects of international chemical control legislation around the globe was discussed. Hands on topics related to Unites States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia and other key developments in The Americas, as well as European and Asian updates were of high relevance to the audience.

Up-to-date information on current and emerging chemical control legislation in The Americas (e.g. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia Mexico and USA), the Asia-Pacific (e.g. Australia, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia) as well as Europe (e.g. EU, Russia and Turkey) were highlighted and discussed. As always practical advice and lessons learned by industry were well received, since they show how to act within the legal frameworks set. Both authorities and industry shared their views on risk management trends and issues. Furthermore, we looked into managing issues with a business impact like roles of courts, supply chain communication and circular economy. Moreover, there was a focus on other chemical control legislation also relevant for the chemical industry like endocrine disruptors and nanomaterials. And of course approaches to global notification of new substances were shared.

The post-conference seminar on the last day was on Korea and global CBI issues. The authority and industry experts outlined the legal framework for chemical control legislation in South Korea, with a key focus on implementation of K-REACH. Furthermore, global CBI issues were discussed.
