ChemCon The Americas 2020 - Philadelphia

Partners of ChemCon The Americas 2020:

Summary

ChemCon The Americas 2020, our 7th ChemCon The Americas, took place from March 2nd to 6th, 2020 in Philadelphia, USA. Almost 200 experts from 21 countries representing over 125 companies, authorities and associations attended our seminars, conference sessions and exhibition. Together, they contributed to an inspiring exchange of experiences and discussions about worldwide regulatory affairs.

The week started with a comprehensive Monday program with a hands-on workshop on ‘TSCA CDR-rule (Chemical Data Reporting)’, where experts provided industry with information to better understand the updated requirements of the CDR rule as well as guidance on the actual reporting as of June 1st, 2020. This workshop was followed by an in-depth pre-conference seminar on ‘The amended TSCA and its 2020 priorities, implementation and direction for new and existing chemicals’, where US EPA provided background information on the current status of TSCA on new and existing chemicals. Furthermore, US EPA provided insight in the direction of TSCA and its 2020 priorities and industry contributed with first-hand experiences and lessons learned on among others new chemicals and risk evaluation. In the afternoon, in another in-depth pre-conference seminar on ‘Hazardous chemicals information schemes’, authority and industry experts shared their views, knowledge and experiences on the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) program, PRTR, CFAT, poison centre notification. Also an overview of the EU waste framework directive and various industry perspectives on circular economy were provided.

During the conference sessions a variety of aspects of international chemical control legislation around the globe was discussed. Hands-on topics related to the Unites States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and other key developments in The Americas, as well as European and Asian updates were of high relevance to the audience.

Up-to-date information on current and emerging chemical control legislation in The Americas, the Asia-Pacific as well as Europe were highlighted and discussed. As always, practical advice and lessons learned by industry (e.g. on global hazard communication, CBI, authorisation and restriction) were well received, since they show how to act within the legal frameworks set. Both authorities and industry shared their views on the safe use of chemicals in the chemical universe. Furthermore, we looked into managing business impact in the global supply chain of key regulations with stakeholders. We also focused on other chemical control legislation relevant for the chemical industry, like endocrine disruptors, nanomaterials, ROHS and microplastics. And of course, approaches to global notification of new chemicals and polymers were shared.

The post-conference seminar on the final day focused on the ‘Greater China Region’. In this seminar authority and industry experts shared their views, knowledge and experiences on the legal framework for chemical control legislation in the China region and provided hands-on experience on complying with chemical control legislation. Furthermore, we took a closer look at the trade tensions between the USA and China and its impact on the chemical industry.
